Green Travel

Leighton Halls Welcomes Green Travellers!

At Leighton Hall Estate, we’re striving to reduce our carbon footprint, encouraging green travel as part of our environment and sustainability responsibilities. Think the car is the only way to get to us, in North Lancashire’s glorious countryside? Think again!

As a thank you from us, all visitors who arrive at our door by public or shared transport, bike or on foot automatically qualify for 2-for-1 entrance. Read on for simple ways to leave the car at home and hot foot it to Leighton.

Closer than you think

Nearby Carnforth enjoys excellent national rail and bus network connections. Hop on a regular train or bus service from Carnforth centre to Silverdale station, making your 20 minute bus or 5 minute train journey through glorious Arnside and Silverdale AONB part of your visit. Need help with the buses or trains? Call: 03457 48 49 50 for train information and 0345 241 8000 for help with the buses.

From Silverdale station, it’s a 1.5 mile (40 minute leisurely) stroll on excellent public footpaths, through part of well-known RSPB Leighton Moss to Leighton Hall itself. Ditching the car also gives you the best chance of spotting a wide range of local majestic wildlife such as bittern or stag.

If mobility is a factor, 'Jock’s Taxis' offer a prebooked service for visitors to the Hall. Book on 01524 727777 and travel from Carnforth train station.

Why not make a day of it

Our open day hours are 1.30pm – 5.30pm, so why not combine an afternoon exploring Leighton Hall with a mix of amazing local visitor attractions in the morning. Use public transport to:

  • Enjoy a morning spotting marsh harriers, terns and bitterns at neighbouring RSPB Leighton Moss, continuing your stroll up through the foot paths for refreshment in our charming tearooms before your afternoon of discovering the hall and gardens.
  • Indulge in retail therapy on Carnforth’s high street, with independent gift shops and one offs, including England’s biggest second-hand bookshop, before continuing on to us via train, bus or taxi.
  • Explore Arnside’s picturesque Victorian village, seafront and wonderful coastal scenery; after a paddle (or chips), Silverdale station is just 20 minutes by bus or 10 minutes by train, before a walk to the hall.
Get on your bike

Walk or cycle to Leighton Hall with a healthy "commute". With miles of quiet roads, national cycle trails, peaceful footpaths and stunning views, the Arnside and Silverdale AONB offers memorable hiking and biking. Whether you’re coming 3 miles from Carnforth, or exploring our 81-mile cycle trek along one of Britain’s newest, and most beautiful routes (the Bay Cycle Way), you’ll find our traditional tearooms the perfect pitstop before stepping into Leighton’s fascinating history and gardens.
