THE BIRDS AT LEIGHTON HALL

See if you spot these birds of prey on your visit to Leighton Hall.

Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) Elle

Males and females: Dark brown with pale area on chest and underwing. Barred brown tail

Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo Regalis) Harley

Males and females grey head, white chested with red area. Red and grey wings with pale tail

Harris Hawk (Parabuteo Unicinctus) Shadow, Jarreth

Males and females: Dark brown with chestnut area on wings and legs. White stripe at top and bottom of tail

Kestrel (Falco Tinninculus) Midge, Domino and Kato

Males: Grey head, pale chested with teardrops red wings. Grey tail with white and black stripe at tip.
Females: Mid brown with paler chest with teardrops brown wings and brown barred tail.

Saker (Falco cherrug) Raphael & Fortune

Males and females: Vary in colour from pale cream to dark brown. All have pale chest with teardrops and barred tail.

Peregrine: (Falco Peregrinus) Bobby

Males and females: Blue grey head and wings. Pale chest with barrings and barred tail.

Gyr Falcon (Falco Rusticulous) Creek

Males and females: vary from white, silver grey or black, depending on which part of the arctic they originate. White gyrs have only a few black bars on their wings and tail. Silver and grey gyrs have pale chests with barring and a barred tail.

Steppe Eagle (Aquila Nipalensis) Gorby

Males and females: Dark brown with random paler areas often on the back of the neck. Solid brown tail.

European Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) Apple & Crumble

Males and females: Mottled light and dark brown. Slightly paler chest tail. Mottled light and dark brown ear tufts. Orange eyes.

Mexican Striped Owl (Rhinoptynx Clamater)

Males and females: Mottled light and dark brown pale chests. Mottled light and dark brown tails. Dark eyes and ear tufts.

Barn Own (Tyto Alba) Solly and Elsa

Males and females: Cream coloured head and back of wings flecked with grey. Pale chest and under wings often completely white. Pale tail. Dark eyes.

Tawny Owl (Strix Aluco) Toni, Star and Feather

Males and females: Mottled light and brown including chest and tail. Dark eyes. Call is a distinctive twit twoo.

Snowy Owl (Nyctea Scandiaca) Hedwig

Females white with black bars on head, back and chest. Males almost completely white. Yellow eyes.
