Sculpted by local artist Anthony Padgett, the Millennium Angel proudly stands in "The Old Orchard" at Leighton Hall and this will be its home for the next 5 years. The sculpture stands an impressive 2 metres tall and is based on imagery of the Angelic Seraphim, who guarded the Ark of the Covenant. It took over three years to complete the original design, which was hand carved from limestone and marble.
Between 1998 and 2000 Anthony approached hundreds of computer manufacturing companies and found 14 who agreed to provide £150,000 worth of sponsorship-in-kind manufacturing needed to create this monument. The original 30 centimetre high limestone piece was scanned by laser, scaled up and finally in 2001, cast in bronze.
The Millennium Angel was exhibited at trade shows and galleries and won the prestigious “About Vision” International Art & Technology award 2002.
Anthony said “I’m originally from Morecambe and I wanted to bring my work back to the local area, so I’m delighted that Leighton Hall have agreed to give my Angel a home!”
Lucy Arthurs, of Leighton Hall, said “The Millennium Angel stands at the edge of the Woodland Walk and has already been a big hit with visitors to the Hall. We’ve never had anything like this here before, so it’s taking a while for us to get used to it. Every morning I open my curtains and a huge angel is staring at me from the orchard!!”
